How to Insert Emoji in Google Docs

Emojis are small images, static or animated, that are used to depict emotions, objects, or symbols. There are hundreds of different emojis available.

You probably use emojis on WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, or iMessage. But did you also know that you can use them in Google Docs? In this guide, we’ll show you how to insert emojis in Google Docs to enhance communication.

How to Insert Emojis in Google Docs

There are hundreds of popular emojis, with many more added on a regular basis. You can add these emojis to Google Docs using the Special characters option, keyboard shortcut, or by copying and pasting. Here’s how to insert emojis in Google Docs using these methods.

1. Use Special Characters

To add emojis in Google Docs using special characters:

  • Open Google Docs on your desktop and open the document in which you want to add an emoji. You can add emojis in comments, tables, email drafts, product roadmaps, review tracker, project assets, or content tracker.
  • Click Insert and select Special characters from the menu options. In some cases, you can simply click on Emoji (where applicable) and skip the Special characters step.
  • Click the Symbol dropdown in the Insert special characters dialog box, and select Emoji.
  • You can search for different emojis under the People and Emotions category by sorting through the options, using the scroll bar, or typing a keyword or codepoint (unique alphanumeric code assigned to each emoji).
  • If you want a different type of emoji, click on the People and Emotions dropdown and select a more appropriate category.
  • Once you find the emoji you seek, click on it to add it to the document or app.
  • When done, click the x button in the top-right corner.
  • 2. Use Keyboard Shortcut

    Just as you can add emojis in Windows 11 using keyboard shortcuts, you can also add emojis in Google Docs using a simple Google Docs keyboard shortcut. To do so:

  • Press the Windows key + Period (.)
  • Then, type the keyword or codepoint for the emotion, object, or symbol you wish to express.
  • Knowing and using basic keywords or prompts such as “happy, sad, excited, rolling on the floor, kiss, and heart” among others, lets you find emojis faster. You can also add kaomoji's or symbols by clicking on the other two tabs to the right of the emoji tab.

    3. Copy and Paste Emojis

    You can also add emojis in Google Docs by copying and pasting them from external sources. To do so:

  • Go to a site like Get Emoji.
  • Select and copy the emoji(s) you want to add to Google Docs.
  • Return to Google Docs and paste the copied emoji(s) where needed.
