There is no bigger pop music icon than Taylor Swift, but even the 12-times-Grammy-winning legend can’t perform everywhere. A recent report claims that she had to turn down a royal invitation for unavoidable reasons.
Taylor Swift has been booked and busy in 2023. The singer has taken her record-breaking Eras Tour across the globe and also managed to release two Taylor’s versions of her older albums – Fearless and 1989 – this year.
In between her packed schedule, the celebrity also attended award shows such as the Billboard Music Awards and the VMAs. But there was one crucial event that she had to pass on, even though it had a cultural significance like no other.
Taylor Swift turned down royal event
According to a new report, Taylor Swift had to reject the invitation to perform at the coronation of King Charles III. Royal expert Omid Scobie claims, in his upcoming book Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival, that Tay Tay was playing multiple dates at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium May 5-7 and the coronation took place on May 6, which made it impossible for her to attend the royal ceremony.
Scobie suggests that a coronation concert for King Charles seemed like a ‘challenge.’ Music icon Elton John was another big name to turn down an invitation due to scheduling issues. Reportedly, the Spice Girls, Harry Styles, and Adele also couldn’t attend for various reasons.
Taylor Swift’s ‘royal’ connection
Tay Tay is no stranger to performing for the royals, or should that be ‘with the royals‘, as the Blank Space crooner once convinced Prince William to perform with her and Bon Jovi on stage! The Prince Of Wales was in a jovial mood singing at the Centrepoint charity event at Kensington Palace.
Looking back, the prince said he “got up like a puppy” after the pop icon persuaded him to come on stage. Recalling the memorable moment, Prince William shared: “I’m sat next to Taylor Swift. She’s on my left. And after Jon (Bon Jovi) does his first song, there’s a pause, and she turns to me. She puts her hand on my arm, looks me in the eye, and says, ‘Come on, William. Let’s go and sing.'”
It did not take more than T. Swizzle’s gentle request as the Duke of Cambridge added: “To this day, I still do not know what came over me. Honestly, even now I’m cringing at what happened next, and I don’t understand why I gave in. But, frankly, if Taylor Swift looks you in the eye, touches your arm, and says, ‘Come with me…’ I got up like a puppy and went, ‘Yeah, okay, that seems like a great idea. I’ll follow you’.”
